Latin music is a type of music that incorporates almost every genre and style; its commonality is that traditional Spanish, African, and some indigenous inspiration has influenced the unique rhythms that characterize Latin music. The flair and style of Latin music is definitely representative of the culture, as well as the open display of sexuality. Though the music and dances of many Latin cultures can be a bit more sexual, this is not always the case, and even music that is a bit more sensual is not necessarily focused on that aspect. In fact, in some Latin cultures where religion is central to the community, sexual promiscuity is definitely not encouraged. However, as shown in this Pitbull music video that is extremely popular in the United States, sexual freedom is the main focus and has definitely influenced the American perception of Latin music and culture. I had heard the song “I Know You Want Me” on the radio and enjoyed the catchy beat, but had not seen the music video until yesterday. The entire video consists of extremely curvy women in ridiculously skimpy clothing shaking their boobs and butts for Pitbull. For example, at 2:35ish a completely unnecessary camera angle was used to get a close-up shot of side-boob. This video is definitely suggesting that Latin women want to sleep with everyone and are all promiscuous, which is definitely not representative of the culture. The main reason I like this video is because it is ridiculously stereotypical and over the top, so hopefully it will prompt some discussion!
I love Latin Music such as Salsa, spanish guitar or other intrumentals. It is full of life and engery, happiness and passion. I have experienced a little bit of this culture in Mexico and Costa Rica. I would love to travel to more countries of Latin America and even to Spain. I enjoy listening to spanish radio stations for their music. It almost makes me feel like I am on vacation! Latin music is fast and upbeat. Flamenco dancers usually wear bright colors and long wavy dresses. I envision the men wearing sombrerros and shaking maracas. This representation of Latin American culture is very colorful and happy, however it masks the struggles they go through daily such as crime, poverty, little income and lack of government leadership in some countries.

I must totally agree with Rachel on the Iron & wine video. Just love the integration of cultures in the video! It has the best of both worlds. Simliar to the informative clip above, Latin music has several meanings, for me it is hard to say what Latin Music means to me but I think mostly, it reminds me of my childhood. I grew up constantly surrounded my Telmundo, so much so that it has become a family joke because the music and dancing seems a bit humorously trying. In other words, the music and entertainment is very exaggerated. This can be considered a representation of the culture in that many latin cultures are vibrant and exciting from the dress to the dancing to the language!
Shakira - Ojos Asi is one of my favorite songs. It is not exactly the music video that I like but the words and what the represent.

Latin music is a lot more expressive to the latin American culture. I believe that there is a lot more heritage and culture within the video that shines through. While American music videos and music in general is very commercialized I see that Latin american music is different in a way that it does not focus on commercialization but rather on the message being sent through the music.
Latin American music is much more colorful and vivid. I can see a greater response from fans because of the ways in which Latin American music is depicted. I think that even music that is in another language sounds beautiful. The song Ojos Asi reminds me of love and the way one feels about someone when they first meet. To me the song is magic.
What does latin music mean to me? It means that I can woo girls by singing the lyrics to them. No but seriously, latin music just means music that's energetic and a little more eloquent than some other music I've listened to. Although it stands no comparison to Blink-182, (what type of music or band/artist can?) it's still really fun to listen to. Just like any music, you can get sort of snapshot of the time period in which the music was written. So from the country that the musica is from, or a certain area of the country, you can get ideas that were popular at the time, see the diction of the people at the time, the political atmosphere, and a lot of other stuff that usually just goes over people's heads. It also might not reflect that culture very well because it comes straight from the mind of the artist, and they could just be experimenting with some new things that is from a different time and place. Of the few latin music videos I've seen, I would say that Limón y sal by Julieta Venegas would be my favorite. But I think she was born in the US so maybe this doesn't count. Plus I suppose I'm cheating because nuestra professora showed us this. Anywho, it's in an interesting filming style and it's pretty much the only latin music video I've seen that isn't just the artist(s) dancing around and looking sexy...
Despite the fact that i can't always understand what is being said; I actually enjoy listening and dancing to latin music. I find it to be very unpredictable and exciting, unlike American music. Latin music to me means freedom. I think many Latin musicians have a lot of performing and composing their music, at least they appear like the do. I think many Latin American people rely on their music to keep their spirit highs. With America giving them such a hard time with illegal immigrants and various other lies, its hard not to get dispersed and sad. I don't think i have a favorite Latin American music video but i do find Latin American videos to be very entertaining to watch.
"Latin Music" is very diverse and some songs I have heard are quite "catchy." Listening to Latin Music can be inspiring, a source of relaxation, and can serve as a source of entertainment. It is representative of culture because it portrays values held by different groups of people in Latin America. The different genres inside "Latin Music" are each preferred by differing age groups also. It may not be representative of Latin American culture because one genre may not represent every group of people in Latin America. It may represent one group much more so than another. For example, today's Latin Pop is mainly representative of Latin America's youth/young adult culture and is not representative of older Latin Americans. I like the "Waka Waka" music video by Shakira because I feel it represents not only African culture, as this is what it is promoting, but also Latin America culture because after all, the song is in Spanish. I also enjoy doing the dance in Zumba class!
To me, latin music is simply any music in Spanish or relating to Spanish or Latin american issues. It is very representative of the culture with its energy and passion. On the other hand, the energy can be contrasted with the more subtle aspects of the culture including their conflicting past and respect for their ancestors. I like the energy and enthusiasm in latin music and especially acts like Santana. There are only a few other musical genres which incorporate so much excitement and passion. It's exotic but familiar.
To me, whenever I hear the term "Latin Music" I always think of very vivacious music with a fast beat and fast rhythms. I usually think of it as a song being sung entirely in Spanish or part Spanish and part English. Some of the songs in the video clip, I did not think of as being considered Latin Music. I think that it represents the culture by being upbeat and vivacious with a very talented singer with a strong voice. I do not know much about Latin Culture, so I am not sure in what ways it Latin Music does not represent the culture but I'm sure the image of their culture has been tweaked a little to gain more acceptance and good ratings from Americans. I do not have a favorite Latin Music song. However, the artist I most commonly think of first when I think of Latin Music is Enrique Iglesias, and I like most of his songs.
Latin American songs are very enthusiastic for the most part. They make one want to get up and just dance. The songs represent culture and diveristy. I know in many Latin American countries artists use music to express how they feel about the economy. In a lot of Latin American countries the citizens are usually upset with the government so they rap songs about how they feel and express their anger.
Latin Music Latin music is a conglomeration of many different styles and cultural influences. Like any genre of music, it has several different styles underneath an all-encompassing umbrella described as “Latin Music.” Latin jazz, mambo, cha cha, salsa, chicano rock, tejano, latin pop, and reggaeton are some of the many types of latin music listed at the end of this video, which gives us an idea of the great diversity found within this genre. Latin music means something different to everyone, and varies within the regions and countries it is found. Everyone puts their own spin on things, the result influenced by their own experience in their Latin culture, which is part of what makes Latin music so great. My dad and I used to listen to Ricky Martin with the windows down and the music blaring when I was little, and that Latin American music always made me happy because it was so upbeat. I played an instrument all through high school, and we played several Latin songs that were always intricate, with an upbeat begging, dissonant middle, and always conclusive end. I think Latin American is representative of the culture in its diversity. In addition, like many types of music it is heavily influenced by the individual cultures in which the music is developed. In addition, like many cultures, it has in some ways become Americanized, music that may not be representative of the culture it originated from. But is this a bad thing? I don’t think so. The new music being developed is now representative of a new culture that is building in America – that of Latin American culture. I always liked listening to Ricky Martin’s Livin La Vida Loca: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p47fEXGabaY
I love Latin music because when I was younger I remember my dad playing Satana's music on the radio in the car. So I grew up with Latin music and it reminds me of my dad. Latin music is very represented in American culture because we use many types of latin flare to the American music in many songs. Latin music is very influential in a lot of American music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z84CgD3o-xg Nancy Trepany SPN210

To me, Latin music is upbeat, passionate, and can appeal to anyone even if they do not speak spanish. I think Latin music represents different parts of their culture depending on the genre. For example, bachata is a genre which shows the importance of dance in the spanish culture. Reggaeton is another popular form of spanish music which is often more upbeat than other forms. Although reggaeton is one of my favorite types of music, I don't think it represents the Latin culture as well as music such as bachata does. I think reggaeton in the Latin culture is like rap in American culture, people love to listen to it, but not all rap is quite representative of the American culture. I have been listening to Latin music for about 5 years now. Even though I cannot understand everything they are saying, it has helped me improve my spanish a lot over the years. I love all types of latin music, but I specifically enjoy bachata and reggaeton. I love listening to reggaeton while I run, because it is so upbeat and keeps me going. I also love how a lot of songs in zumba classes are reggaeton. I don't have a favorite video, but I have a favorite bachata song and reggaeton song:
